Smart Growth
Goes on Trial
Does Smart Growth violate the American
Dream? Is it really a ploy to densely pack those who can't
afford a single-family detached home? Hear attorneys, witnesses
for the prosecution and defense, and Journalist-Turned-Judge-for-a-Day
Bill Fulton in a barely-scripted encounter on the consequence
of Smart Growth. You, the audience, serve as jury.

Welcome to PlanDiego!
For 72 hours this October,
expect to be informed, inspired, entertained and, should
you choose, run ragged.
Expect to find more in-house programs, more mobile workshops,
and more that's unusual than at typical annual conferences.
Also expect a really gorgeous environment.
PlanDiego - the CCAPA 2002 Statewide Conference - is centered
in Downtown San Diego, in the Community Concourse, adjacent
to City Hall. You'll be just blocks from the water, in the
midst of restaurants, shopping, nightlife, and a building
boom. You'll also be in the heart of the City - and it pumps.
The Westgate Hotel, the main conference hotel, is a block
away from the Community Concourse. Arrangements have been
made with a number of other conference hotels, and they
too are all within walking distance. For details on where
to stay, click Accommodations.

The soul of PlanDiego is found in more than 45 in-house
sessions, and they've been selected to appeal to a broad
range of interests and experience levels. There'll be updates
on CEQA and OPR's new general plan guidelines; workshops
on effective negotiations, ethics, and public speaking;
and solutions for dealing with high density opposition,
agricultural land consumption, and development code obsolescence.
And that's only a sample. Click on Conference
Sessions to find the details about the programs.
Since the hot topic of the year seems to be Smart Growth,
we'll not only inform you about it, we're putting it on
trial. On Wednesday morning, October 9th, there's a mock
trial with prosecuting and defending attorneys, star witnesses,
and Journalist-Turned-Judge-for-the-Morning, Bill Fulton.
You get to be the jury and decide if Smart Growth is bad
policy or good planning. For more information, click on
Smart Growth on Trial.
PlanDiego starts with a bang, and ends with one too. Our
opening reception includes dinner and mammals at the San
Diego Zoo. We conclude PlanDiego with a gourmet picnic lunch
and lots of entertainment on San Diego Bay. But we've got
special events planned for every day of the conference.
• San Diego Orientation Tour (Sunday)
• San Diego Wine Country Tasting (Sunday)
• San Diego Orientation Tour (Monday)
• San Diego Dinner Harbor Cruise (Tuesday)
• Picnic on the Waterfront (Wednesday)
For information, click on Special
Events.
We've got nine mobile workshops on Monday, October 7th and
Tuesday, October 8th:
• Town & Gown: The Campus/Community Interface
• Orchids and Onions Community Design Awards
• Multiple Species Conservation Program.
• Coronado by Boat, Bike, Bus, and Foot
• Public Art as a Planning Tool
• It's Not Your Father's Redevelopment
• Hiking the San Dieguito River Park
• Downtown as an Urban Design Laboratory
• 24,000 Acres of New Urbanism
Then, on the morning of October 9th, we've got four more
bargain priced mobile workshops for folks who don't want
to attend the Smart Growth Trial.

• Little Italy
• Sherman Heights
• Ballpark District/Gaslamp
• Bazaar Del Mundo
Click on Mobile Workshops
for more details.
On
Monday, October 7, plan to spend the early evening
at the consultants reception (with hosted hors d'oeuvres
and libations), followed by the fabulous CPF Auction. Check
out the CPF webpage at CaliforniaPlanningFoundation.org.
Actually, the San Diego Host Committee has worked hard to
put on the Mother of All CCAPA State Conferences. So listen
to your mother and heed this advice: Bring your spouse,
your kids, your significant other. But sign up early. Mobile
workshops have limited space, and so do the conference hotels.
Click on Register
Online right now.
And remember - you can plan
at home and you can plan away, but come October 6-9, 2002,
you definitely want to PlanDiego.
